Tension (2021)
Medium: Acrylic and Collage on Canvas
Year: 2021
The REDLINING series continues with "Tension". As I worked on this piece the timeless melodies of Celia Cruz, the "Queen of Salsa Music," provided a backdrop and inspiration for me while I tried to represent the feeling of stress in Black women. During that reflection I wondered if Celia Cruz ever had her moments of stress and self-doubt during her remarkable rise to fame and if she did how did she cope with it?
Being a Black woman brings a unique strength, often expected to embody unwavering resilience. Yet, within that strength lies vulnerability - an aspect of our being we should embrace and cherish. "Tension" serves as a poignant reminder that we are allowed moments of vulnerability without judgment.
Instead of constantly wearing a brave face, we must recognize the power of seeking support for ourselves. Through this, we display courage, safeguard our well-being, and enable personal growth and self-empowerment. I hope to spark meaningful conversations and emphasize the importance of self-care and prioritizing our mental and emotional health.
"Tension" isn't perfect; its lines are crooked, and its underlying message may feel overwhelming. But, its brightness and gold detail reminds us that having the strength to confront our stress-filled realities will make us resilient and beautiful.
